Warning: Dazai-centric, mention of torture. Repost from my AO3.

"People Feel Fortunate Looking at the Tragedy of Others"
"I Will Strip and Rest My Head on Your Lap"

A shrill scream broke the tranquility of night. Dazai did not even try to hide the sneer on his face as he gazed at the pitiful man, bound and blindfolded, his fingers being cracked one by one by Dazai's underlings. Dazai watched quietly how the man panted harshly, his body trembling as the Mafia goons let him absorb the pain.

“So,” he started with a cheerful voice, “are you going to tell me who hired you?”

“F-fuck you, Mafia dogs!”

Dazai raised an eyebrow. He clicked his tongue and signaled his men to break another couple of fingers. “Wrong answer~” The man shrieked in agony again. “Come on, I don't want to hurt you any more than this, so why don't you just sing for me already?”

The bound man, someone with his own share of torture experience under his sleeve, found strength to laugh hoarsely at the young executive. “This is nothing, boy. Soon you'll run out of fingers to break, and you won't get a fucking information from me!”

“Oh?” Dazai's smile broadened if only a fraction. “I must admit you're a brave man, but...”

Silence dropped for a second as Dazai trailed off. His men gulped visibly at how their executive suddenly emanated enough malicious intent befitting his title as the Demon Prodigy of Mafia. And then Dazai continued,

“Did you think this is the worst treatment you can receive?”

Dazai Osamu. Youngest Mafia Executive in History, Demon Prodigy, wielder of the Ability No Longer Human. The brainy half of the most powerful duo of Port Mafia, Double Black. A young man feared by his enemies and his allies alike. A boy who had barely turned a man with no sense of sympathy, just cold calculations.

Today, he finished another difficult mission, adding to the river-long list of his successful missions. As he exited the interrogation room—he knew the larger portion of Port Mafia members dubbed it as the torture room—he noticed his partner, the brawny half of Double Black, was leaning on the opposite wall with arms folded in front of his chest.

“Did you get anything out of him?” Nakahara Chuuya asked, though the look in his eyes revealed that he already knew the answer.

“Why, Chuuya, it's bad habit to ask something you already know the answer of!”

That reply apparently made Chuuya tick, just as Dazai expected. Easy, too easy. “Haa? I'm just trying to be civil!” the redhead snarled. “We worked hard to bring that guy in, so I want to make sure you do your job properly!”

“I always do my job properly. And it's just Chuuya who worked too hard.” Dazai shrugged flippantly and turned to leave. Out of habit, the smaller man also turned around, his stomps following him closely.

“That's because you conveniently forgot to tell me there was another squad in wait, asshole!”

“No, I didn't forget. I like to watch Chuuya working for my part too, that's all~”

“What the fuck.”

Chuuya continued to grumble and threw more complaints to him as they walked down the hallway. He entertained the redhead with cheerful replies that were just enough to keep him talking animatedly, though most of them were filled with ridiculous insults, until they reached the office of Mori Ogai, boss of Port Mafia. Dazai teased his partner one last time before he knocked on the door, ready to report.

“Go straight home, Chuuya, or the police will mistake you as an underage roaming around at night~”

“Fuck you, Dazai.”

When he finished the report and left the room, though, he couldn't find the small redhead anywhere in the base. A quick look at his phone told him that Chuuya had indeed headed home and was now safe behind the walls of his room. Dazai let a chuckle slip through his lips. He pocketed the phone again and walked swiftly, this time to one hidden bar in downtown.

Dazai Osamu was many things in one person, but 'a friend' was widely believed as non-existent among the list. He would prove this wrong time and time again, however, especially as he sipped a glass of clear whiskey in this bar, sandwiched between his two friends. A dark-haired man in glasses and a rough-looking red-haired man. Both did not have a reputation such as his, but they were people he actually cared about.

“I heard you brought in another man,” Sakaguchi Ango commented off-handedly to him. “How many people does it make this month?”

“Nine. The boss is getting impatient.” Of course Mori did not appear impatient at all during his report earlier, but his eyes could see what other people could not. He did not understand the need to get impatient. For him, the gears of this particular case was unfolding at a good rate, the perfect speed which he could enjoy the most. He learned the art of predictions from Mori, but it seemed like he had beaten the Mafia Boss in his own game. Dazai took another sip from his glass.

“Hmm,” Oda Sakunosuke, the redhead on his right, muttered. “Was it the man you brought after getting ambushed in the site?”

“Yes.”

Ango eyed him curiously. “You look awfully calm. Was there no casualties?”

“Well, Chuuya got wounded pretty bad, but I've sent him home and put some medicines in his coat pocket, so he should be okay.”

Odasaku chuckled. “Playing shepherd and shepherd dog again, Dazai?” Both of his friends had heard about the infamous Double Black's teamwork from Dazai himself, and they very much understood how the young mafia liked to let Nakahara Chuuya handle all the fights. It's not the first, most definitely not the last time, Dazai casually informed them how his partner got hurt in the process.

“Did he get his wounds treated properly?” It was not the first time either, that one of them would ask about Chuuya's wellbeing in concern.

“He may not look like it, but that shorty is as resilient as a cockroach. He'll be fine,” Dazai threw a carefree smile at them. What he didn't say, what his friends could still hear from closed lips, was a simple--

he can still function as my pawn.

additional ending

.
.
.
Dazai Osamu did not feel any sympathy. He was full of cold calculations. And yet here he was, picking on the lock of Nakahara Chuuya's front door. As he swung the door open and stepped into the small room, filled with the scent of antiseptic, he replayed Odasaku's sentence in his head.

Why don't you show some goodwill for a change? Even a shepherd dog needs to be pampered once in a while to keep it loyal.”

He didn't really want to admit it, but Odasaku was right. Just a couple of medicines were not enough. He needed to take care of his pawn properly, that's why he came to this room. Certainly not to watch the rise and fall of Chuuya's chest under his blanket, not to gaze at the smooth line of his jaw, not to trace the curls of his red hair, no. Dazai ignored the subtle ache deep in his chest.

What a farce.

On second thought, this was unnecessary at all—a pawn would always be a pawn even without any visible effort to ensure his loyalty. He let out a sigh before tracing back his steps to the front door. Dazai knew Chuuya would never betray him, would never betray the Mafia. He could calculate all the factors in his personality and found no possibility of the redhead's treason. Afterall, Chuuya was the only one who could stand face to face to him without whimpering in fear, without donning a fake smile.

Dazai let the door shut close with a click.

Warning: Post Guild arc with no Fyodor arc. My friend said this is full of innuendos tho I don't see where??? Repost from my AO3.

It was only ten in the morning and Chuuya was already fuming inside his office. He had several reports from his men he needed to go over before the lunch meeting, and he had planned to do it last night—that is, until a damn annoying bandage-wasting device showed up on his doorstep and practically put his plans into flames.

Ever since the incident with the Guild half a year ago, Port Mafia and Armed Detective Agency had been on a truce, however strained it was, and Dazai had been taking advantage of it to ruin Chuuya's daily peace. His ex-partner now liked to visit his apartment every now and then, sometimes bringing dinner over but most times he just ate whatever food Chuuya had. (Chuuya had learned to cook for two, after the umpth time he had to go to bed with half-empty stomach.)

Last night was no different. The suicide maniac came barging in, spouting nonsense about how the man-tiger finally found his wits and asked this girl on a date, how the creepy siblings was found making out in the closet (again), how the sadist doctor got a bouquet from a secret admirer, yadda yadda. (Chuuya was not paying attention! He just couldn't help but take in some information because the bastard was talking right in front of him, across the dining table, with this huge cute grin on his face, okay?) And in the middle of debating about the pros and cons of 9 mm Beretta, Dazai's hand was suddenly on his cheek, pulling him in for a searing kiss.

Needless to say, Chuuya didn't get any work done for the rest of the night.

Not to mention, he woke up with a lingering ache in his limbs, making it even harder to leave the bed.

-story start-

The whole house had been buzzing with quick footsteps, ceaseless orders, and random panicked mutters here and there since early this morning. Truth to be told, three quarters of the wedding ceremony preparations that was to be held in this household had been done up to last night, but as expected the last-minute rush was unavoidable. Chuuya listened closely from his place in the room, following with his ears the heavy footsteps of Tachihara who had been passing his room for the fourth time now—who knew what he had in his arms this time—and the quiet, reserved voice of Kouyou who was giving out directions to the servants. Well, it was Kouyou. Chuuya knew the wedding ceremony would be flawless, just like everything Kouyou handled.

The problem was, he didn't wish for the wedding to happen. His wedding, to be precise. He wanted nothing more than to tear away from the ladies painting his face white and curling his hair into intricate shapes. He wanted to run away from this place, from this town, from the clutches of that high-class samurai he was going to marry.

“Chuuya,” Kouyou's cool voice pulled him out of the silent rage twirling in his body.

Without moving his body much in consideration for the ladies tending to his makeup, Chuuya regarded the owner of this establishment. “Kouyou-anesan,” his answer was flat. He made damn sure Kouyou could feel the dripping discontent in his tone.

The woman glared at him with narrowed eyes, her beautiful fan stretched open to hide the lower part of her face. “The groom will arrive in ten minutes.”

“I see.”

Chuuya's disinterested reply pushed the conversation into a halt, until Kouyou decided she had had enough of her protégé's irate attitude.

“Be careful, lad. This is your wedding,” she said sharply.

The redhead bride-to-be sneered. It's not usual he's this negative to the woman he had considered his own sister, but extreme times called for extreme measures. Chuuya let a snow-white cloth be draped on his head as he continued to smile in spite. “I don't remember asking for a wedding, though. I wasn't even one of your geisha. How did I get roped into this... this farce?”

Slapping her fan closed, Kouyou sighed exasperatedly. “He's an influential figure in this area. You know how things work here, Chuuya.”

“Did he even know he's marrying a male?”

At Chuuya's question, the older woman giggled heartily. She turned around gracefully and made to exit the room, unmistakably going to welcome the groom's party because time was running short. She gave her answer as a parting message, said airily and lightly as if she's talking about the cat next door.

“That is for you to find out, lad.”

sea /sea/ n the salt water that covers much of the Earth's surface (literary)

The sea is cold, is unforgiving. It swallows everything you throw into it, and throws up everything it wants to your beaches. It knows no boundary and yet it becomes a boundary for humans who want to go to the other side of the world, as it sends waves after waves of foreboding.

But the sea is ever-changing, too. Sometimes it is kind and warm. Sometimes it invites you to come and play inside its belly because it keeps way too many jeweleries inside. Sometimes it is not as cold as the blue mountain. Sometimes it's a deep jade.

And jade is Hope's eyes.

Lightning sees the sea every time she peers into his eyes for a second too long. A sea that sometimes runs amok, sometimes drifts idly. His eyes have a depth that sometimes entices her but sometimes sends her scurrying away too. Such a complicated being, Lightning decides one day. She chooses to keep Hope at an arm's length lest she catches herself staring into those eyes again.

That was the plan, anyway. But right now, she can't take her eyes away from his, mere centimeters away. She is nose to nose to Hope, with one of his big hands on her right cheek and the other on the small of her back, sending shivers up her spine. They are so close she can even count his speckles. She bets he can count her eyelashes.

And with slow movements, both of them decide to close their eyes at the same time, leaning closer and closer and—

Lightning lets the sea take her wherever it wants.

It was not supposed to be like this. Hope stared at his mark, a small red lightning bolt on the outside of his left wrist, in horror. Next to him, an equally horrified girl clenched the seams of her skirt until her knuckles went white. Both were silent, drown in their thoughts, until Hope gathered his courage and turned to his girlfriend.

remember /re·mem·ber/ v to have or keep an image or idea in your mind of (something or someone from the past)

It was almost strange, if not downright ridiculous. You know, there was this slight pull at his heartstrings at the mere sight of the new student. She was pretty, yeah, especially that rare rose-blonde hair, but come on, Hope Estheim did not value girls based on their looks alone. He's sure he was different than the boys currently leering at her, but this nagging feeling deep inside his chest made him wonder, maybe he's not so different after all? Maybe he's also attracted to the pretty face and was experiencing a subtle sexual response?

“Hey, Hope,” Anthony, his seatmate, elbowed him on the rib. Hope cried out lowly in pain. “Watch the eyes, buddy. You're staring. She's gonna eat you alive like she did those guys there.”

Hope whipped his head to the aforementioned group of guys. Sure enough, the new student was giving them the meanest, iciest, scariest glare of the year that it sent the jocks teetering away from her immediate vicinity. Now that's something. Hope was sure no one would dare to as much as look at her anymore. Jab. Anthony shook his head. Ugh, maybe 'no one' did not include him necessarily. How embarrassing.

To make matter worse, the girl seemed to notice him staring this time.

The weird thing, she didn't give him a death glare—and for his part, the incessant tugs became stronger as he suddenly felt nostalgia. He didn't exactly remember per say, but he just knew this meeting was long overdue. This meeting was planned, was promised, since before he was born into this life. Maybe somewhere between life and death, between one lifetime and another.

A/N: To tell you the truth, the idea for this piece stemmed from a fanfic called "Love, Hope" by Advocaat. I hate crying so much each time I finish reading it so I made a selfish attempt envisioning how Hope and Lightning meet again in their next lives. I want a happy ending for the babies, thank you very much. But now I'm crying because I can't write as beautifully as Advocaat so yeah. I'm so sorry.

understand /un·der·stand/ v to know the meaning of (something, such as the words that someone is saying or a language); to know how (something) works or happens; to know how (someone) thinks, feels, or behaves

The crystal shattered into waves of light, afloat and swimming into the lifestream. The group of saviors laughed and tried to follow the current with their eyes, mesmerized. It was when Mog turned his body and said sadly, “I'm going with them, Kupo,” that they broke out from the daze.

The eidolons, the trustworthy ally who had fought with them right until the end, materialized then. Hope was able to flash a smile to his big friend—one so full of gratitude and perhaps melancholy because he knew this meant farewell—as Alexander drifted further from his body. Each of the eidolons gave a curt nod to their respective master before dispersing into the lifestream as well. Suddenly there was an odd relief, a hollow space inside Hope's body, the place Alexander just left open. It's sad, but farewells were necessary for embracing the new world.

The last eidolon to vanish was Odin. The white knight spent more time to bow respectfully before Lightning. They were comrades, fighting arm in arm for a distinctly longer time after all, Hope thought. As Odin stepped back, Hope watched Lightning close her eyes in deep reminiscence. There were tears cascading her cheek, and he stared in wonder. This Lightning was not afraid to show her soft side, and for him, she looked a million times stronger than before. Something bursted in his chest—and then he saw Lightning turning to them, her eyes still glassy but her lips curled up into the slightest smile. She was so beautiful.

"It's time," she said. With gentle movement, she beckoned the others to her—which, of course, Snow responded by poking Serah forward first. They floated upwards, in a way that made the rest of the group believe that yes, they were finally going to the new world after years of endless battles. Sazh and Dajh, Yeul and Noel, Snow and Hope, and Fang and Vanille—they all followed the Farron sisters.

Hope was surprised, also a bit annoyed, when Snow also gave him a push while flashing a knowing grin before taking off himself. Hope couldn't deduce right then what that smirk meant. Only when he turned his head did he realize that while Serah was obviously reaching out for Snow, Lightning was opening her arms for him. So that's why Snow was grinning that much. Hope wanted to say some rebuttal to him but well, Lightning was waiting and there's not really any time left, so he decided to just ignore Snow and focused his eyes to the rose-haired savior.

She was smiling, ever so slightly, when Hope's hand touched hers. Somehow, if he were to describe her smile then, it was one of nostalgia. It made Hope choke back, his chest twisting in a lovely feeling of finally reuniting with the one he missed all these years, and he just needed to say something to find his sanity again.

Their surrounding was quickly dissipating into light particles. He knew he needed to be quick, before they too leave the old world. But he couldn't find his voice. It was like all feelings suddenly came back crashing to him, sweetly overwhelming his not-yet adult form. In his struggle, suddenly Lightning clenched his hands, not hard enough to hurt yet enough to halt the thousand gears running inside his brain. She flickered her eyes. Just like that, he calmed down instantly.

She understood.

And then, their souls were swept away, embracing the brand new world.

A/N: I have actually wrote something about this quite a while ago, and when I saw this prompt I just thought the idea would match well. But I didn't remember, like at all, where I put that scrap of paper from the while back so I had to start from a scratch. It was annoying, lol, so I got kinda held back. In the end I still think the (lost) original version is better! /sobs

letter /let·ter/ n a direct or personal written or printed message addressed to a person or organization

Hope Estheim never fancied himself as a supernatural believer—no, quite the opposite, he's a man of logics and answers and it was his job to decode the impossible into possible—but for this time, just this one time, he knew there would be no logical answer.

It started on one rainy afternoon, his apartment offering shelter and warmth after a field day at work (he would never, ever understand the higher-ups who insisted on doing a field day under pattering rain). Everything seemed normal—he unlocked the door, turned on the air conditioner, and peeled off his wet clothes. After a nice hot shower he went to the kitchen to set up a mug of steaming tea. Then, with the mug in hands, he sat down in the living room and got his laptop started.

That was when he spotted an envelope on top of a shelf.

It was weird. He was fairly sure there was nothing there that morning, when he went to work. With questions still racking his brain, Hope took the envelope and carefully opened it. The envelope itself was plain white, the kind you can buy at convenience stores, but the letter inside was a little different. The paper was gradient pink in color, and it had a faint scent of roses. The writing was ink black, shaped like it was done with an ancient pen rather than modern-day ballpoint. But more than anything, the message was what did Hope in.

She is near.

What? Who is near? And why is it important that she is near? Baffled, Hope slouched back on the couch with heavy breaths. Who in earth could have sent this message? How did they put it inside my apartment? When? What does this all mean? His mind's gears worked in full speed trying to decode this phenomenon, but as he listened to his own breath the solitude of his apartment, he found no answer. And like any other human being when facing a weird condition with no explanation, his brain unconsciously resorted to the primitive solution: this was supernatural.

If he thought that would be the end of his supernatural experience, well, he was wrong. It was only the beginning.

When Hope got home the following day, this time a little after dusk and way more exhausted than yesterday, he was greeted by the same white envelope sitting conspicuously on his shoe rack. He immediately tore it open and pulled out another gradient pink paper with a short sentence written on it.

She is almost here.

Yeah right. Hope decided not to give too much thought into the message (mainly because he needed a hot shower and dinner and sleep very soon) and threw the letter onto the living room's table where yesterday's letter was still on. As he sank his head on the pillow later that night and drifted slowly into slumber, somewhere in the back of his mind he wondered what tomorrow's message would be.

Sure enough, an envelope sat waiting for him on the shoe rack again (perhaps the sender finally understood that the chances he found the letter would be higher if placed on that particular spot). Today he's not so tired and there was no homework, so he picked up the envelope and read it on the couch, mimicking his posture at the first day.

Tomorrow.

It was almost like a promise. Hope felt his heart beating a little faster at that. What is going to happen tomorrow? Is it about that 'she'? He should have been a little concerned—he didn't know whether this letter spoke of good things or bad things, after all—yet he felt strangely happy with the prospect of something happening tomorrow.

That night Hope fell asleep with pleasant expectations. That night he dreamed of a promise, made in the far away past and possibly different universe.

The following day was Sunday. Hope spent a good part of the morning for sleeping in and a lazy breakfast. He had no plans for today except doing some reports, maybe making some progress at that journal he started a month ago, and waiting for this 'tomorrow' the letter spoke about.

At eleven, his doorbell rang once. It was a rare sound, because as a single man with few friends he rarely had any guest. It crossed his mind for a second that this was his moment of truth, his answer for the letters. The doorbell rang once again.

Hope didn't even bother with the peephole before opening the door. There, in front of his apartment, a woman stood with a scrap of paper in her hand, the perfect figure of someone looking for an address. With a quick glance, Hope took in her appearance. Her white coat reminded him of the white envelope and her rose-colored hair was the perfect same shade of the letter.

This is the 'she'.

“Light,” he muttered, out of breath all of a sudden, as that woman smiled at him. He didn't even know where that name came from, his mouth just moved.

She shook her head, almost exasperated but still smiling widely. “What, so it's you, Hope.”

Her tone took him by surprise. She later explained, after making herself comfortable on his couch, that there had been this letter giving her an address. His address. That's why she set out to find this address, wanting answers for her own questions—about who sent it to her, and how she knew his name like they're the best of friends even though it's not even included in the letter.

Hope couldn't answer. She didn't mind.

So in the end, supernatural things had played a big role on his meeting with his future partner for life.

A/N: I... have no answer. This was 'supernaturally' written after a session of frustration breakout this morning.
Maybe, just maybe, this is inspired by soulmate!AU prompt I saw on tumblr about a compass.

Roses, jasmines… She sighed. That man was certainly not a flowers man, so picking a kind of flower for him had proved difficult. Not that he would be able to complain or anything, but she liked to be a little perfectionist. Just like how he taught her well. Even if it’s as trivial as picking flowers.

Now back to matters at hand. Roses were too obvious for him. Should she go with old way lilies? Maybe forget-me-nots? Ah, now she felt very unknowable about flowers, even though she’s a female. Maybe she should ask for references to Sasha. Or Armin, because that guy seemed to know everything on this planet, including flowers. But asking would bust her plan to go in secret. She sighed again. She needed to have faith in her own choice, then.

Ah. Another nostalgic lesson from the Captain.

Picking a bunch of lilies, Mikasa went to the cashier and paid for her purchase, then walked the familiar path to the cemetery, where his tombstone waiting to be visited.

Levi leaned back heavily on the farthest wall from the people crowding around an apparently sleeping girl on a bed in the medical bay. He could see distress and concern on their faces, especially the two boys who sat closest to the bed. They didn’t look like leaving any time soon, but it’s getting late and Levi would have none of that.

“Oi, brats. It’s almost your curfew so you’d better get your asses outta here,” he commanded in loud, crystal clear voice. The cadets flinched at that, and though they seemed unwilling, they obeyed and left the bay. Except the two special cases. Levi sighed. He should’ve expected this.

“Look,” he said, finally pushing his body off the wall to the blond and brunette. “I know you two are worried about Mikasa, but Hanji already said she’s gonna be okay. She’s just working the toxic out of her body, which is why she needs all the rest she can have. You hanging around here won’t help her, you know.”

Armin nodded hesitantly. “Yes, but…”

“No buts. You’re leaving, or you’ll have ten more laps to run tomorrow,” Levi commanded, almost irritated, but keeping his voice low in concern of the sleeping girl. With the level of finality in his words, Armin knew there’s no way around it. He silently pulled Eren’s arm, who actually looked almost ready to faint (he had had a rough day with Hanji’s experiments so Levi couldn’t really blame him), and left.

Now alone with the female cadet, Levi pulled the chair Armin just vacated closer to the bed and sat down.

“Thanks.”

The small, feminine voice cutting through the silence did not surprise him. “Huh. I was beginning to wonder when you’ll drop the act.”

Mikasa shot him a look but conceded. “They wouldn’t leave if they knew I’m awake.”

“Right.” The captain assessed her face thoroughly. “So how are you feeling?”

“Still a little hard to breathe, but overall I’m fine. Just like you said, my body’s in middle of working out the toxic.”

Levi nodded. “That’s good.” He watched her fingers play with the covers for a little while, then added, “I didn’t know you’re allergic to nuts.”

Avoiding his gaze, Mikasa muttered to the ceiling, “I never told anyone. Not even Eren and Armin.”
Judging by her tone, that was all the answer she would provide him, but Levi understood her well enough. She did not like having a weakness. What a stubborn girl.

“So I just need to poison you with peanut butter if you annoy me, huh,” he sneered.

“Papa!”

Levi stopped wiping his blades as a little girl ran and practically jumped into his lap. She carefully avoided contact with the stuffs in her father’s hands though; she had found out they were dangerous and harmful, the hard way.

“Papa, Mama said you have holiday for the whole next week. Is it true?”

Levi put his blades away and patted the girl’s head affectionately. “Yeah. We can celebrate your birthday together, Yuuki.” The little girl let out a series of adorable giggle, clearly pleased that both of her parents would be there for her birthday. She squealed an ‘I love you, Papa!’, hugged him tightly, then hopped off to run elsewhere, presumably to her favorite playground where her peers were waiting.

Sighing, Levi stood up with his blades in hand. He walked to his (and his wife’s) bedroom in silent strides, stopping only a moment to store the weapons in a case near the wall. Once he entered the room, he spotted his woman combing her slightly wet hair in front of a mirror. She flicked her eyes to him over the mirror, the only sign of her acknowledgement.

“Hey,” he said, leaning against the door.

“Hey,” she replied evenly, her back still facing him.

“When the hell did our Yuuki get so energetic like that? Last time I checked, she’s a sweet silent girl.”

Mikasa laughed softly. “Lately she’s taken a liking to Sasha.”

“Huh. Figures.”

“She’s still a sweet girl though. She helps with house chores.”

This time it’s Levi’s turn to snort. “I know. I just kind of prefer the silent-but-strong types.”

Putting the comb on her dresser, Mikasa turned her body to face her husband. A glint of mischief mixed with mirth crossed her eyes. “Sounds like someone we know.”

It’s warm. She felt comfortably warm, and she clutched the blanket covering her form more tightly, not wanting to let go of this warmth. After that Mikasa blinked several times, trying to be fully awake and assess her surrounding. The room she was in was dark, save for the dancing fire in the fireplace near her. So that’s the source of this warmth. But she frowned deeply at the unfamiliar fireplace, the unfamiliar couch she was sleeping on, and the unfamiliar room altogether. Where could she be?

 “Oi. You’re awake?”

Levi, her mind screamed suddenly. And then memories came rushing in. Last night, unlike any other night after doing their ritual in the cafe, Levi took her to his apartment and they kissed and finally united right there in front of that very fireplace. She must have fallen asleep soon after and was moved to this couch by Levi. These memories was supported further by the newly found fact that she was bare under the blanket. We had sex, she marveled almost dreamingly.

But her train of thought was stopped by Levi’s finger flicking her forehead. “Still dreaming?”

“Hey!” she swatted his hand away, then sat up while keeping the blanket secure around her form. “What time is it?”

“Just before dawn. We have about an hour before we need to leave.” He sat down, passing the mug he was nursing to her. “Did you sleep good?”

“Yeah. Thanks.”

Then they let the moment melt into beautiful silence, listening to the periodic crackles of the fire and the telltale chirps of early birds outside. Mikasa sighed as she drank the warm liquid in his mug—cinnamon tea, she found out smugly. While she drank his tea slowly, Levi kept his eyes on her. Slowly he leaned in, whispering hotly into her ear, “Do you want to do it again before leaving?”

Fighting a furious blush on her cheeks, Mikasa nodded and placed the mug on the coffee table. “We need to be quick, though. I still need to stop by my place to change. I don’t want to go to work wearing clothes from yesterday,” she smirked.

“No problem.” With that, Levi pulled her closer and kissed her passionately.

Warning: AU; Levi as the owner of a tea cafe, Mikasa as the administrator who actually runs it. Originally posted on tumblr.

He handed her a cup of tea along with a small plate of bite-sized rolls.

It’s almost midnight, but both of them were still wide awake, busy with their own businesses with occasional flying remarks between them, giving the air of comfortable silence. It had become some kind of ritual of them: Levi would fumble around with his teacups and kettles and measuring devices to make new tea recipes, while Mikasa would sit on one of the bar stools with documents and a calculator in hand. He would slide a cup of tea to her without a word, and she would immediately drink it slowly, then give comments about the flavor or suggestions for side dishes that go along with the tea.

Tonight was no exception to such ritual. Mikasa picked the cup carefully. “What is it this time?”

“Cinnamon.”

A thin eyebrow curved up. “Cinnamon?” It was unusual, she thought. She did not say anything else, though, knowing the talk-less-do-more attitude of her partner, and brought the rim of teacup to her lips. A sip and she was trying to contain her smile. The mild spiciness accompanied with a rush of sweet left a tingling aftertaste on her tongue. Besides, the flavor was quite strong, unlike his usual creations, which let her know he must be trudging outside his safe zone. “It’s cinnamon all right,” she simply stated.

“And I’m a clean freak,” he retorted back. She could tell the older man was getting antsy from the clipped tone he used. Levi frowned at the girl. “Seriously, how was it?”

“It was good. Young, over-energetic teenagers will like it.”

Levi actually exhaled, seemingly relieved. “And why is that?” he stepped out of the counter to sit on the bar stool next her her. Propping one of his elbow on the smooth surface, he let his body slouch a bit while facing her way.

Taking another sip from her teacup, Mikasa smiled to herself. “I just know, Owner. Or do you doubt  the foresight of this cafe manager of yours? Not that I’m trying to remind you that I practically pulled this cafe out from the mud and made it run smoothly again.” That she did, and she liked to gloat only to tip him off, because before she appeared he did not care about the administration or management shits about running a cafe.

“So you saved my ass, girl, so what?” Already getting used to the way she smiled smugly, he smirked. “But no, this cinnamon tea is not going to be on the menu.”

Mikasa let out a startled gasp. “What? Why?”

“It’s a special flavor. Only for you.”

There was a beautiful woman down the fresh fruits aisle. No, no, not that Levi was eyeing a random woman while shopping, nor was he a desperate bachelor getting impatient in search of his Juliet, but this woman just kind of stood out in the crowd. There was no way not to look at her. She was tall. Her fiery red scarf looked good on her, accentuating her midnight black hair and plain white dress. Levi knew he was practically staring, if not ogling, but he couldn’t stop. At least he managed to keep a straight face… he thought.

After a few while taking her time inspecting some oranges and limes then placing them in her cart, the woman finally moved on. And just his luck or something, she walked right at his direction, to the frozen meat section.

Levi Ackerman did not falter. No. The sausage just slipped out from his hand. That’s all. And no, no, he certainly, and absolutely, did not do it to catch the beautiful woman’s attention.

If she decided to help him pick it up, it was just another lucky strike. If he could breathe in her fresh, lemony scent from their close distance, then it was surely another lucky strike.

So don’t you dare tell him otherwise.
